Italian cuisine is known for its interesting line of dishes that were made from scratch. One of their most popular foods is pasta that has noodles of various sizes and shapes. Apart from that, they are also called the home of the famous gelatos which are frozen desserts made from healthy ingredients.   • Pizza was first invented in the 18th century

As pizza is known to be one of the most popular dishes all around the world, not many people are aware of its origin. Although it is widely consumed in Egypt and Greece, this was first invented in Naples, Italy during the 18th century. According to legends, the creation of pizza was inspired by the request of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita when they visited Naples in 1889.

Since the couple became bored with the usual diet of French cuisine, they asked for an assortment of pizzas from the city’s famous restaurant. As a result, it became a pie looking dish that was topped with soft white cheese, red tomatoes and green basil. The Queen loved it so much that the pizza was named after her, pizza Margherita.

  • There are more than 600 different pasta shapes

Little do many people know that there are over 600 different pasta shapes that you can find worldwide. Some examples include the rotini, macaroni, linguine and gnocchi among others.

  • Italians eat pasta at least once a day

With the plethora of pasta dishes in Italy, it’s no secret that locals eat them at least once a day. An average person living in Italy has consumed more than 51 pounds of pasta every year according to statistics. Compared to other places like in North America, residents only eat around 15.5 pounds annually.

  • Garlic bread was not originally made in Italy

Although eating garlic and toasted bread is famous in Italy, this was not an invention by Italian chefs. This was made by Americans along with the practice of dipping bread in a dish of olive oil.

  • Caesar salad was created in Mexico

Caesar salad is known as one of the most delicious salad varieties in the world. It’s a mix of various ingredients such as romaine lettuce, raw egg yolk, parmesan cheese and croutons. This was first made by an Italian restaurateur named Caesar Cardini while he was living in Tijuana, Mexico.

  • There’s a National Italian Food Day

Italians love food so much that they have a national holiday called ‘Eat Italian Food Day’ that is celebrated every February 13.
